The Ekhof theatre is a special jewel in the series of historic
baroque theatres. This baroque theatre, the oldest with the original stage
machinery, was installed inthe ballroom of Friedenstein Castle,

Curio cabinets,
actually art and curio cabinets, came into fashion in
Europe in the 16th century when especially the princes
courts were overtaken by a passion for collecting. Not only art
objects where collected but
virtually everything regarded as significant and worthy of interest
at the time: paintings, copperplate engravings and sculptures are
also part of it of as well as books on all areas of
science, coins and medals, astronomical instruments, globes and
atlases, skeletons, fossils and minerals as well as ivory items
turned on the
cutting-edge of technical knowledge, artfully engraved ostrich eggs,

Prints and sketches are among the oldest items in the art cabinet.

When the art cabinet was founded, the coin collection had already
achieved an impressive reputation. Even 16 years before the first
inventory of the art cabinet, the Weimar “Rat” Friedrich
Hortleder compiled the first inventory of the coin collection
under Duke Ernest the Pious (1640-1675). The inventory,
containing 516 coins and medals, must have been compiled before
